Advice and Tips
When you are looking to hire a local contractor and you begin searching locally, consider the following tips and advice. It will save you a lot of time, money, and headaches.

Finding a reputable contractor or sub-contractor:
  • Word of mouth is definitely always the first place to start.

Are the contractor and his employees Licensed and Insured?

  • Very important, make sure your contractor is licensed by the state. Also, having the necessary insurance is also extremely important. Your new contractor should possess the following types of insurance:
  1. Workers Compensation
  2. General Liability
  3. Builders Bond (this may not be required in some states)

How long has the contractor been in business?

  • The longer the better obviously, this will eliminate the here today gone tomorrow businesses/contractors.

References and don't be afraid to ask to visit a current job site.

  • Get references you can call, but also visit job sites.

When you visit the job site go after 5pm or on the weekend.

  • Look at the detail to the work is it done quick and sloppy, or is it clean and precise? Also look where and what this contractor works on is his job area clean? Swept up? Debris piled off to the side or outside? It is very important to have a clean work area it shows the following:
  1. Professionalism
  2. No clutter equals no unnecessary accidents = safe job site
  3. Experience
  4. Care, it shows not only do they take pride and care in their work but your house as well.

Ask for a time frame for the completion of the job.

  • Materials can hold up a job however, if the contractor has been in business for a good amount of time he has built a relationship with local custom suppliers for timing of delivery. Weather can delay the time on a job which is neither the contractors fault nor your fault, remember this because it does happen!

Check the Better Business Bureau.

  • Has the company had any complaints filed with the Better Business Bureau?  (www.bbb.org)

Prices, is there really a difference?

  • The old saying comes into play here "You get what you pay for!" Try to remember this, because you can get it cheaper doesn't mean you will get the quality and craftsmanship you expert or deserve.

I hope some of these tips and advice help in your future ventures with contractors and locating the best person for your needs. If there is anything that we at DND Trim Carpentry can be of assistance with please feel free to e-mail or call us.
